Advanced Internet Marketing Technique # 1- Target Marketing
The first advanced internet marketing strategy you need to thoroughly grasp in order to make your online business more profitable is target marketing.
Target marketing means that all your marketing must focus on the people who need and want the solutions that you have to offer.
Well, isn’t that obvious? It certainly seems so, but there is a bit more to it than initially meets the casual eye. Let’s look at some important aspects of target marketing.
Target marketing starts with the advertisements you create and the information you publish in order to attract customers. Let’s take the advertisements you write as the first example.
Every ad you use in your pay per click campaigns, every ad you send to ezines (newsletters), every ad you buy on forums and anywhere else, must always speak to the people in the niche or market you have chosen to cater to.
Remember this point because it is extremely crucial.
So if you have chosen a niche like “dieting” then all your ads should be clearly directed towards that market.
It won’t be a good decision to write ads about “weight loss” in general. Sure, you may get more people responding to your ads because weight loss is a wider niche than dieting. In other words, dieting is a small niche within the larger weight loss niche.
But if you have products on dieting, your conversion rate will suffer. In other words, most of the people who respond to your ads will not buy from you.
Why?
Well, because even if they may be interested in losing weight, they may may not want to do so through dieting.
If, on the hand you write ads specifically about dieting, you might get fewer people responding, but they will be more interested. Hence more of them will buy your products.
The same applies to information you publish. When you write articles, make videos, create webinars, write short reports or ebooks, and so on, it is important to make sure that they always speak about the specific problems your specific niche or market has and the solutions to those problems.
Further still, your website, blog and newsletter should be written in a way that lets your niche know within seconds that the information is directly relevant to them.
For example, the headings and subheadings on your website and blog must clearly indicate that the proceeding information will be beneficial to people in your niche.
This is perhaps even more important when doing email marketing. The subject headings of your marketing emails should let your readers know that it is worth their time to open your email because the information within relates to them.
Nowadays, my email inbox is bombarded with emails from every internet marketing guru and his pet. I suspect yours is too.
So in order to stand out from the clutter, it has never been more important to use subject headings that your niche can immediately recognize as applying to them.
For example if your niche is about soccer, then a subject heading like “How to bend it like Beckham” would almost certainly get a high open rate. I know this because I am an avid soccer fan who hangs out with several other avid soccer fans.
Secondly, the ads you write and the information you publish, must all be placed where your target market tends to be found. So, you need to find out the websites and blogs they visit, the forums and social networks they belong to, and the newsletters they read.
Then place your ads and information there. When you do this, you will increase your chances of succeeding because your ads and information will be seen by people who are most likely to be very interested in what you have to offer.
Makes sense right?
But ti’s very tempting to buy one of those cheap ads featured in a generic email list where the list owner promises to send your ad to 500 000 people for only $50 or some other ridiculously low price.
The first time I bought one of these ads, believe it or not, I thought I was about to strike gold.
I thought, “500 000 people! My time is now!” I actually had the lyrics from John Cena’s “My Time is Now” playing in my mind. “I spent 20 plus years seekin' knowledge of self so for now Marc Predka's livin' life for wealth”!
But the long and short of it is that I made no sales whatsoever. Yes, that’s right. Not one person bought what I had to offer.
One of the reasons for this was that the ad I bought was not in a targeted newsletter. I was not advertising to a targeted list.
The people had no interest in what I had to offer. Not even Dan Kennedy could successfully advertise my offer to those people. There are other reasons as well but that is one of the key reasons why my ad failed so spectacularly.
Even if I advertised 10 times in that newsletter, I would still have got an underwhelming response.
So I’ve since learned that it’s much wiser to buy ads in smaller newsletters that specifically target your niche.
The ads may be a little more expensive but it's worth the price because the readers are highly likely to be interested in what you have to offer.
We’ve focused on newsletters because they seem to be the most alluring places to buy ads when starting out online. But the same principle of buying targeted ads applies to forums, social networks, websites and blogs. So advertise only where your target market hangs out.
Last but not least, target marketing means that the products you promote to your niche should be products that solve their specific problems.
So for example if your niche is made up of people who are just beginning to learn the game of tennis, the products you sell or promote should teach them things like basic techniques and rules of the game.
In other words, your products should solve the specific problems of these tennis beginners. It would be of little help to sell them a DVD on how to hit a back hand shot with pin point accuracy like Roger Federer.
It would be equally futile to offer them coaching on how to curl the tennis ball like Rafael Nadal, so that the ball curls out of the court and then bends back onto it! That’s advanced stuff and it wouldn’t help them very much.
If you want people to take your offers seriously, provide them with products that solve their specific current problems. That's the way to truly help them.
