I recommend that you begin with affiliate marketing if you are just starting out online. It is much easier because you don’t have to worry about things like creating a great product and a powerful sales page.

You don’t have to worry about processing orders or providing great customer support.

The business you represent does all that. All you have to do is send people to someone else's sales page through your affiliate link. If any of them decides to buy the product or service, you get paid a commission.

It's as simple as that! And that's why affiliate marketing is one of the first internet marketing basics to focus on.

You can start selling your own products and/or services when you are ready to provide customer support and a bazillion other things. Otherwise you risk killing your internet marketing business faster than you can say, “bad idea”. J

So assuming you are starting with affiliate marketing, how do you choose what to sell to your market?

Well, a great way to start is to look at what they are already buying. Then simply jump on the band wagon and promote that too.

Actually, when starting your first internet marketing business this is probably the wisest way to choose a product to promote.

You can do research to find out what products people are already buying at market places like Clickbank and Amazon. On each of these sites, you will be able to clearly see which products are selling very well.

Don’t be afraid that you'll face huge competition if you promote well selling products. The internet is a huge place, far huger than you probably think. And there are numerous ways to promote any product.

This makes it possible to make reasonable sales in almost any market even if there is so called high competition.

However, if you choose a very tiny market that has fierce competition, you may not be able to make any real progress. So the size of the market that you choose to sell products to is also very important.

Both Clickbank and Amazon are great market places because they provide a wide range of digital products that you can promote as an affiliate.

They are also completely free to join. With Amazon however, you will need to have your own website before you can promote their products as affiliate.

A Marketing Plan

You can firmly grasp all the internet marketing basics we will look at here, but if you miss this one, your progress will be painfully slow and severely scattered. In fact, your online business will be all over the place.

You will run in circles and find it hard to move ahead.

So you really need a marketing plan. This plan should detail how you will manage to market your chosen products or services to your chosen market and make a profit.

It should set out where you will find your market and how much it will cost to advertise to them.

Of course you don’t always have to spend money on advertising. You can also use free internet marketing methods to bring traffic to your site.

But the point is that having a plan will make things clear for you. You will know exactly what you need to do in order to progress from where you currently are to owning a successful internet marketing business.

In addition, you will get a feel of what methods you will enjoy using to attract customers.

The ones you feel good about when including in your marketing plan are probably the ones you should start with. For instance, I personally love content marketing. Unsurprisingly, it’s always a huge part of my marketing plans.
